The standalone filter_rule_parse() already rejected the rsync xattr-name
'x' modifier, but the list parser used by --filter/-f silently dropped the
flag for merge/dir-merge rules (and relied on a second parse for plain
rules). Reject it explicitly in filter_list_parse_append_depth() with the
same diagnostic, so '-x', 'merge,x' and 'dir-merge,x' all fail cleanly.
Also reject the unimplemented rsync merge modifiers 'e', 'n' and 'w'
instead of folding them into the pattern, which previously produced
misleading errors such as "could not read merge file 'n file'". Only a
token made up solely of modifier characters is treated as a modifier run,
so glued patterns ('-newfile', '-e2e') and mixed tokens ("H,!secret")
keep their historical parsing.
Adds tests/test_filter.c with focused rejection and supported-syntax
cases.
- --delete-delay: count/track only entries actually removed; a directory
refilled before commit (ENOTEMPTY) no longer inflates Number of deleted
files or the --max-delete budget (unit + integration + rsync differential).
- --stats: per-type Number of files breakdown; only stored regular files
count as transferred; transferred/literal byte totals and Total file size
(symlink target lengths) now match rsync for whole-file transfers.
- --progress: print the leading ./ root line and include the root entry in
the to-chk denominator (single-file output byte-identical to rsync).
- --out-format %C: use the selected transfer checksum and render every
algorithm exactly like rsync; checksum_digest_file gains md4/sha1/none.
Reclassify --out-format to Divergent (protocol-specific %b/delta-%c).
- Docs: RSYNC_COMPAT tally 107/25/24, HANDOFF update. No wire change.
#291:
- Compile --exclude/--include/--exclude-from/--include-from into the SAME
ordered rule list as --filter/-f (first match wins), so the common
`--include='*.txt' --exclude='*'` idiom and include-alone semantics match
rsync. The legacy per-kind scanner arrays are no longer applied.
- -x/--one-file-system emits the cross-device mount-point directory entry
(empty) instead of dropping it, in both the sequential and parallel scanners.
- Stop passing the legacy arrays to the scanner; document -f is --filter.
#292:
- New src/shared/format.c/.h: rsync "big_num" (comma-grouped integers) and
decimal -h human sizes, %M/%t timestamp, and the STATUS_DEST_INFO codec.
- Receiver answers each STATUS_CHECK with a pre-transfer destination snapshot
(new report_dest_info wire field + STATUS_DEST_INFO, PROTOCOL_VERSION
2.23.0) so the sender can render true itemize columns.
- Itemize now emits rsync-correct update/type chars and c/s/t/p/o/g columns
for files, dirs, symlinks and hard links, comparing size/time/perms/owner/
group against the reported destination.
- --out-format gains %i %n %f %l %b %M %t %o %p %B %U %G %L; %f is the
relative display path, %M the YYYY/MM/DD-HH:MM:SS form, %b the literal
bytes sent.
- --list-only prints transfer-relative names, directory entries and ls-style
grouped sizes.
- --stats prints rsync's multi-line block on stdout; -h uses decimal units.
Tests: unit tests for the filter ordering, format primitives, itemize
columns; integration + differential tests against real rsync 3.4.1 for
itemize/out-format/list-only/selection and -x. Golden wire len/hash and
protocol version strings updated for 2.23.0.
Today a server rejection sends a bare STATUS_ERROR and the reason only
reaches the server log, so the client cannot say why a transfer was
refused. Add an optional, bounded server->client error-detail frame:
- Status gains STATUS_ERROR_DETAIL appended LAST so existing wire
values are unchanged.
- send_error_detail(fd, msg) sends STATUS_ERROR_DETAIL followed by the
existing length-prefixed string primitive, slicing over-long messages
to MAX_ERROR_DETAIL_BYTES (4096).
- receive_status() (and the timed/keepalive status readers) always
consume the detail body and map the status back to STATUS_ERROR,
capturing the text into a thread-local buffer exposed by
protocol_last_error(); a bare STATUS_ERROR leaves it cleared. Every
existing call site keeps working and the stream cannot desync.
- Upgrade the daemon module gate / config validation (config.c), the
final transfer failure (server.c) and receiver-side path/node
validation (file_receive.c) to send a concrete reason; surface it on
the client in client_send.c/config.c.
- Bump PROTOCOL_VERSION to 2.21.0 (CMake VERSION, CHANGELOG, docs) and
update the pinned config wire golden hash / CLI-version tests.
- Add tests/test_protocol_error.c covering mapping+capture, the
over-long bound, bare-error clearing, and thread-locality.
The daemon forks one child per accepted connection, so per-module and
per-source accounting must live in state shared across the children. Add a
fixed-size registry carved from an anonymous shared mapping
(mmap(MAP_SHARED|MAP_ANONYMOUS)) created before the accept loop: a slot
lifecycle (FREE/CLAIMED/REGISTERED) with parent claim/reclaim and a
lock-free, open-addressed per-source table for the per-host occupancy and
the shared auth-failure counter. C11 atomics only; no pthread locks across
fork.
Unit tests cover slot exhaustion, the module/host caps, pid reclaim and
fork-shared visibility.
Implements the client-only residual-batch feature end-to-end:
- src/shared/batch.{c,h}: self-contained single-file batch codec using the
existing chunk_serialize/chunk_deserialize codec (byte-identical by
construction). Magic+format-version header (metadata mode is persisted into
the header so a batch is self-describing across machines), length-prefixed
chunk records, bounded reads that reject malformed/truncated/oversized
records cleanly.
- src/client/client_send.c: write_batch_from_source (deterministic separate
scan pass, loads every chunk's file images, emits header+records) and
apply_batch_to_dest (local apply to a destination root via
file_save_to_disk_full). No wire change, no server involved.
- src/client/client_validation.c: --write-batch XOR --only-write-batch;
--read-batch exclusive with both; --read-batch needs only a DEST,
--only-write-batch only a SOURCE.
- src/client/client_cli.c: main() drives the three batch modes without
connecting/transferring for read/only-write; --write-batch runs the live
transfer (single-threaded so the config survives) then emits the batch.
- tests/test_batch.{c,h} (unit: byte-identical roundtrip with and without
metadata; bad-magic/truncated/oversized rejection) + tests/integration/
test_batch.py (only-write no-server, read-batch no-source roundtrip,
--write-batch with a live transfer, conflict rejections).
- clang-format: realign PART-1 config.h comment block.
No PROTOCOL_VERSION bump, no config-frame field, no server flag.
Stage every successfully written file under a private 0700 .fastsync-stage
directory inside the receive root and atomically publish all staged files
only after the whole protocol stream (manifest/delete handling included)
has completed, immediately before the success/outcome frame. On any
abort/error before publication nothing is installed and staging is removed;
a publish failure aborts the transfer with best-effort cleanup of the
remainder (already-published files are not rolled back). Crash leftovers
are wiped when the next delayed transfer starts.
Wire: new delay_updates config flag (selection-options block), protocol
version bumped to 2.6.0, client/server validation rejects --inplace.
CLI/usage/validation updated. Works in single-threaded and -m modes
(exactly one write_thread stages files; the staged-file registry is
mutex-protected; publication runs once after both threads join).
--existing/--ignore-existing/--update decide against the final destination
at stage time; --backup is deferred to publication. remove_source_files
outcomes are only sent after publication so skipped/unpublished sources are
never deleted. Default (no flag) behavior is unchanged.
Tests: config wire round-trip, CLI parse, --inplace rejection, new
test_delay_updates unit suite (27 suites total), and integration
TestDelayUpdates covering single/-m parity, incremental reruns, remove
source files, receiver-skip ordering, and a deterministic publish-failure
abort path.
Implement rsync-style itemized output backed by one shared change-event
engine (src/client/change_list.c):
- -i/--itemize-changes prints ">f+++++++++ <path>" for files actually sent
(single-threaded and -m); unchanged files print nothing.
- --list-only prints an ls-style listing of files that would be transferred
without contacting the server or writing anything.
- --out-format=FORMAT prints a printf-style template per changed file
(tokens %%f %%n %%l %%b %%M %%%%; unknown escapes preserved).
- --log-file-format=FMT logs each transferred file when --log-file is set.
Events are emitted from the per-file sender path shared by both transfer
modes, so the single sender thread is the only reporter (no races).
- Fix transport_tcp.c: initialize server->ssl_ctx to NULL
(prevents SSL_CTX_free on garbage when server_create_tls fails)
- Fix test_transport_tcp.c: client_create now sets fd=-1, family=AF_UNSPEC
- Fix test_transport_tcp.c: server address family may be AF_INET or AF_INET6
- Fix test_file_sendfile.c: send_path=false protocol includes file_type prefix
Implement rsync-style delta transfer using rolling checksums (Adler-32 +
xxHash32). When a file exists on both sides but has changed, only the
changed blocks are transmitted instead of the entire file.
- New status codes: STATUS_DELTA_SIGNATURE, STATUS_DELTA_DATA
- Protocol version bumped to 1.2.0
- Server generates block signature, client computes delta
- Auto-fallback to whole-file when delta >= 70% of file size
- Works with zstd compression on delta stream
- Configurable block size (default 8KB, --delta-block flag)
- 13 unit tests covering hashing, signature roundtrip, delta compute/apply,
file growth/shrink, and decision logic
