Address confirmed receiver security findings B1-B6:
B1 (HIGH): add O_NONBLOCK to the three receiver read-opens that opened an
existing destination/basis entry before the S_ISREG gate
(incremental_check_open_destination, basis_open_regular, hardlink_read_source)
so a client-planted FIFO can no longer block the receive thread forever while
the post-open type gate still rejects it.
B2 (HIGH/MED): --inplace now fstatat(AT_SYMLINK_NOFOLLOW)-probes the target and
refuses any existing non-regular entry, opens with O_NONBLOCK, and re-checks
S_ISREG on the opened fd. This stops a FIFO from hanging the open and stops a
char/block device from being written directly (bypassing --write-devices).
B3 (MED): under --dry-run the incremental quick-skip no longer reads/hashes the
destination file for --checksum/--delta; it decides from metadata only and
reports would-transfer when the comparison is inconclusive, closing the
read-only-module content-hash oracle.
B4 (LOW): xattr_name_appliable() now gates the two system.posix_acl_* names on
preserve_acls (--acls), not the derived use_xattrs (--xattrs OR --acls). The
receiver drops (never applies) ACL entries when -A was not negotiated while
keeping user.* working for -X.
B5 (INFO): receive_manifest_section() charges a per-entry overhead against
MAX_MANIFEST_BYTES and the aggregate entry count across all three sections is
capped at MAX_MANIFEST_ENTRIES.
B6 (MED): data_charge_session() reserves decompressed/chunk-copy bytes against
the owning ProtocolSession (MAX_CONNECTION_MEMORY) and records them on the Data
so data_destroy() releases them via the Data.owner path. Applied to the
whole-file/append/delta decompression sites and chunk_deserialize() per-file
copies; a missing session owner degrades to the previous uncharged behavior.
Tests: FIFO destination/basis non-hang (with alarm), --inplace FIFO/device
refusal, dry-run no-read oracle test plus updated metadata-only dry-run tests,
ACL-without--acls drop, manifest total-entry cap, and chunk session charging.
RSYNC_COMPAT Phase-2 row M: path-list construction and destination
directory creation while preserving traversal safety.
- -R/--relative with --files-from: transmit each listed entry under its
bare relative destination path (no source-root mirror). Files keep an
absolute local read path plus a separate wire/dest path (File.send_path);
manifest, incremental quick-check and change output follow the wire path,
so --delete and --remove-source-files stay consistent. -R without
--files-from is unchanged (full mirror).
- --no-implied-dirs: client-only, only meaningful with -R + --files-from.
A listed file whose parent dir is not itself (or via an ancestor)
explicitly listed cannot be placed; the run fails up front with a clear
error. No effect otherwise.
- --dirs/-d + --old-dirs/--old-d aliases: -d <dir> transmits the source
root as an explicit empty directory entry (STATUS_MKDIR frame); with
--files-from listed dirs are created empty and listed files transferred,
never descending. Works single-threaded, -m (sequential scanner in the
-m scan thread) and chunk-serialization (per-file type marker).
Directory entries appear in the delete manifest.
- --mkpath: new wire bool; server creates the destination root (and missing
leading components under its authorized root) at connection start. A
missing destination root is now rejected by default.
- Protocol bumped to 2.7.0 (mkpath wire field + STATUS_MKDIR + chunk type
marker). All receive paths funnel through file_save_to_disk_full which
creates directories via the secure confined mkdir engine; dir entries are
excluded from --remove-source-files outcome acknowledgements on both ends.
- Unit coverage: CLI parse (relative/dirs aliases/mkpath/no-implied-dirs),
config round-trip (relative + mkpath), scanner --dirs non-recursion and
-R send_path (sequential + parallel), receiver dir-entry save.
- Integration coverage: TestRelativeFilesFrom, TestNoImpliedDirs, TestDirs,
TestMkpath (single and -m).
- RSYNC_COMPAT: 4 rows move to Implemented (Summary 67/3/5/1/71 = 147).
- file.c split layout retained; security-hardened secure-fs helpers
(open_secure_parent/to_disk_secure/rename_secure/stat_secure) now live in
file.c with file_ prefix and are shared with file_receive.c
- file_receive.c takes the security branch's bounded allocations
(receive_data_limited, data_decompress_limited, size checks) and
STATUS_ERROR signaling
- file_send.c gains the data consistency check on file->data
- client_validation.c: stricter --tls requiring --ca, log_message style
- utils.c: hardened openat/mkdirat mkdir_r from security branch
- Add log_perror() helper (context + strerror(errno)) to the log module
- Replace all bare perror() calls with log_perror() so errors are routed
through the unified logger (stderr sink + optional --log-file sink)
- Convert fprintf(stderr, "Error:/Warning: ...") in client code to
log_message(); raw fprintf kept only for progress/stats output
- Remove -DSTRICT_WARNINGS=ON from coverage job (_FORTIFY_SOURCE + -O0 + -Werror fatal)
- Fix chunk.c metadata guard: peek at present flag before calling metadata_from_buf
so the remaining_size check covers the full sizeof(int)+FILE_METADATA_WIRE_SIZE
- Fix chunk.c UBSan misaligned loads: use memcpy instead of *(size_t*)deref
- Move srand(42) to test_property() top level so all property tests are seeded
- Build and push fastsync-ci:v8 with lcov, valgrind, clang baked in
- Remove all apt-get install steps from CI (v8 has them pre-installed)
- Fix chunk.c use_metadata=true OOB: add remaining_size guard before
metadata_from_buf reads past the buffer. The bug allowed network-facing
chunk_deserialize to heap-buffer-overflow on crafted inputs.
- Also guard against unsigned underflow on remaining_size - sizeof(int)
- Reformat all C/H files to match .clang-format (LLVM style)
- Fix 26 cppcheck const-correctness warnings (constParameterPointer,
constVariablePointer, constVariable)
- Update function declarations in headers to match const parameters
- receive_chunk_data(fd, config) -> Chunk*: shared receive/decompress/deserialize
(eliminates ~25 lines of duplication between server.c and multiprocessing.c)
- receive_manifest(fd, config, next_status): moved from server.c to file.c,
fixes missing 'Deleting files not in manifest...' log in multiprocessing.c
- Removes redundant manual free loop in multiprocessing.c manifest handling
(array_list_create(free) destructor already handles this)
- server.c and multiprocessing.c: remove local chunk/manifest helpers,
remove compression.h include (no longer needed)
- Remove FileReceive struct; use File everywhere with nullable FileMetadata*
- Remove struct stat from File; file size lives in Data->size (data_create_reserve)
- Add FileMetadata struct (mode, uid, gid, mtime) sent conditionally over wire
- Add -M / --preserve flag to client
- Restore permissions, ownership, timestamps on disk write
- Wire format uses per-file present flag for metadata (zero overhead when off)
